I am Yue (Michael) Zhao, a fifth-year Ph.D. student at School of Accountancy, Singapore Management University (SMU). I will be on the 2025-26 academic job market.
My research focuses on empirical financial accounting, with particular interests in digital transformation and ESG. My recent work aims to understand the economic consequences of GenAI adoption. My research has been accepted by Journal of Accounting and Economics and Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis.
I have been studying accounting since 2014, earning my B.A. (2018), M.A. (2020), and Ph.D. (2023) in accounting from Renmin University of China (RUC), where I received the Wu Yuzhang Scholarship and the National Scholarship. Since 2021, I have been pursuing a second Ph.D. at SMU through the SMU-RUC dual-degree program and was awarded the Presidential Fellowship in 2023 and 2024.
[Aug. 2025] The paper "Does Generative AI Facilitate Investor Trading? Early Evidence from ChatGPT Outages" with Qiang Cheng and Pengkai Lin was accepted by Journal of Accounting and Economics.
[Jul. 2025] I presented my job market paper "Open-source Generative AI and Firm Value: Evidence from the Release of DeepSeek" at SMU-SOAR Brown Bag.
[Apr. 2025] The paper "Institutional Cross-Ownership of Peer Firms and Revelatory Price Efficiency" with Young Jun Cho and Holly Yang was accepted by Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis.
